Is having a website expensive? 

Not necessarily!   In fact, you may be surprised at just how inexpensive it really is to own your own domain name and to have a home page running on it!  But of course, like so many things, the actual cost depends very largely on what you want - it is possible to have your domain registered and set up, and a single home-page running on it for R900.00, but if your site is going to be very large and complex, with databases and e-commerce functions for example, it would be more expensive! 

I have set down some costing guidelines here to give you an idea of what it would cost to get started.

The cost of getting a website up and running is generally divided into four parts; The purchase of your domain name (and the annual renewal of that domain), the cost of designing and building a web site (one or more pages that will be placed onto your domain), any on-going maintenance or site-changes fees if required, and the monthly (or yearly, if you prefer) hosting fees that will be required to have the domain hosted on a server.

Well, what does it cost, then?

Firstly, domain registration and renewal fees.  The cost of purchasing a domain may vary depending upon who is doing the registration for you, and may also vary depending on whether you are opting for a .com, a .co.za, or another type of domain.  As a guideline, I will charge R60.00 for a domain to be registered and R260.00 for it to be set up on a server.  The annual renewal fees will be R110.00 per year for a .co.za, and R220.00 for a .com. *

Then, the design and construction fees.  This cost will vary greatly depending on what you want done, and what you would like the site to do for you.  For example, is it a straight one-to-three page informational site, or a more complex one with feedback forms?  Do you want to be able to use a SQL database with your site, and will you want to run e-commerce on it?  Will you provide the artwork and design structure, or will you want me to design and supply all artwork for you?  If you already have artwork and a solid idea of how you would like the site to appear, the cost can be reduced dramatically.  A simple one page informational site can cost as little as R900.00 to design and build. Further functionality (ecommerce, catering for databases, complex graphic designs and so on) shall be specified and quoted seperately.

Thirdly, the ongoing maintenance fees.  This may not apply at all, if your site will be static and will not change at all once implemented.  However, if you will require on-going design or content changes, we will negotiate a rate, probably hourly, at which the work can be done.  Additional pages for your site are usually charged by page at R 380.00/page.*


Lastly, the actual hosting fees.  Even if I design and build a site for you, you needn't necessarily want to host it with me.  Nevertheless, wherever you have your site hosted, you will probably be required to pay monthly hosting fees, and these fees will vary depending on what hosting 'package' you opt for.  Each hosting package will offer you something different, from a very basic package that offers 2 email addresses, a limited amount of server space and a limited amount of monthly traffic, up to a package that will offer you SQL databases, maybe a few hundred email addresses, add-on programs, and a very large amount of monthly traffic.  Our fees range from R65.00 per month, through R99.00 per month, up to R165.00 per month.  There are other options available for dedicated hosting, for example. *


So that's about that.  All together, a registered domain along with your own home page can cost as little as R1200.00 to set up, and as little as R65.00 per month to host!  Why wait?  Contact me now!
